CEREC same-day dentistry in Provo, UT
Rock Canyon Dentistry offers CEREC Same-Day Dentistry in Provo, Utah to help patients restore damaged or decayed teeth in a single visit. This chairside CAD/CAM technology uses digital impressions, 3D design, and in-office milling to create custom ceramic restorations without a temporary crown or a return appointment.
CEREC Same-Day Dentistry explained
CEREC is a digital workflow that replaces traditional putty impressions and off-site lab fabrication. A small camera scans your teeth to capture precise 3D images. Software designs the restoration on screen, and a milling unit carves it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic. The dentist then bonds the restoration to the prepared tooth the same day.
This approach is commonly used for same-day crowns, inlays, onlays, and select veneers. Many single-tooth restorations are suitable candidates. Complex cases, multi-unit bridges, or highly specialized cosmetic shades may still be better served by a dental laboratory. Your exam will determine which route is best.
Why consider same-day treatment?
- Convenience of one visit reduces time off work and extra numbing appointments.
- No temporary crown means fewer fit issues and less risk of the temporary coming loose.
- Digital impressions improve comfort and accuracy by avoiding impression trays.
- Tooth-colored ceramic blends with your smile for a natural look.
- Precise CAD/CAM design supports an accurate fit and comfortable bite.
- Strong materials handle everyday chewing when used in appropriate cases.
The CEREC process
- Consultation and planning: The tooth is evaluated, and X-rays or photos are reviewed to confirm that a CEREC restoration is appropriate.
- Tooth preparation: The tooth is shaped to remove decay or old restorations while preserving healthy structure.
- Digital scan: An intraoral camera captures a detailed 3D model, replacing traditional impressions.
- On-screen design: The restoration is digitally shaped to match your bite and neighboring teeth.
- Chairside milling: A ceramic block is milled in-office, often within 10–20 minutes.
- Finishing and bonding: The dentist tries in, adjusts, polishes or glazes, and bonds the restoration securely.
Your appointment experience
Most visits take about one and a half to two and a half hours from start to finish, depending on the tooth and the type of restoration. Local anesthetic keeps you comfortable during preparation. You can relax while the restoration mills and is polished. After bonding, your bite is checked so you leave with a stable, natural feel.
Expect mild sensitivity for a few days as the tooth settles. Brush and floss as usual, and avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while the cement fully sets. If you clench or grind, a nightguard may be recommended to protect your new restoration.
What CEREC can and cannot do
CEREC works well for many back and front teeth, especially for single-tooth crowns, inlays, and onlays. It may also be used in select implant crown situations when appropriate components are available. Very dark underlying tooth color, deep cracks, or extensive bite changes can make traditional lab options preferable. The goal is to choose the approach that offers durability, fit, and the esthetic result you want.
